Powering the Future with Fusion
India has marked a major milestone in its contribution to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER)—the world’s largest nuclear fusion experiment—by successfully delivering the in-wall shielding package, a critical component for the reactor’s vacuum vessel.
What Is In-Wall Shielding?
The in-wall shielding blocks are specially engineered steel components placed between the double walls of the ITER vacuum vessel. Their dual purpose:
Protecting sensitive components from high-energy neutrons generated during fusion.
Reducing magnetic field ripple to improve plasma confinement and stability.
These blocks are essential for maintaining the integrity and performance of the fusion reactor during operation.
Precision Engineering and Delivery
India’s contribution included:
- 9,000+ shielding blocks, along with support ribs, brackets, and fasteners.
- Manufacturing partners: Avasarala Technologies Ltd. (Bengaluru) and Larsen & Toubro (Surat).
- Materials used: Borated and ferromagnetic stainless steel.
- Weight range: 50 to 500 kg per block, depending on design.
- Processes: Water jet cutting, CNC machining, spot welding, full penetration welding, and rigorous non-destructive testing.
These components were shipped to ITER site at France for integration into vacuum vessel sectors, with a portion delivered directly to the ITER site in France for installation in field joint regions.
Global Collaboration, Local Excellence
The project demanded tight tolerances, complex geometries, and seamless coordination between India, Europe, and Korea. India’s successful execution of this package highlights:
- Its growing expertise in nuclear-grade manufacturing.
- Its strategic role in global fusion research.
- Its commitment to clean energy innovation.
A Proud Moment for India
This achievement not only strengthens India’s position in the global scientific community but also lays the groundwork for future participation in commercial fusion energy projects. It’s a testament to India’s engineering prowess and its dedication to shaping a sustainable energy future.
